Wednesday 11 June 2025 saw members of the Somerset Business Chamber and special guests gather under the stars at the beautiful Glenview Homestead, home of Esk Beef, for an unforgettable evening of fireside networking, regional insight, and community connection.
Hosted by Chamber members Ben Drynan and Sarah Ruddell, the event offered a welcoming and down-to-earth setting for an in-depth conversation on economic development, small business capability, and regional challenges and opportunities.
Spotlight on Regional Development and Government Support
Key speakers Greg Schossow and Danielle Wood, Principal Economic Development Officers from the SEQ West Regional Office of the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning (DSDIP), delivered an insightful overview of the department’s role in supporting businesses across the Somerset region.
Their presentation covered:
Regional investment attraction strategies
Capability development programs to help local businesses participate in major government infrastructure projects
Practical steps for businesses to scale and access national and global markets
Importantly, Greg Schossow also introduced the Small Business Mentoring Program coordinated through the Queensland Small Business Commissioner’s Office, encouraging local operators to explore this valuable support avenue.
Opportunities and Challenges in the Wake of Major Projects
The evening also featured compelling contributions from two special guests: Ashley Corten from Qld Hydro, and Somerset Mayor Jason Wendt.
Their discussions highlighted the scale and potential of incoming infrastructure projects, with Qld Hydro and others expected to bring significant economic stimulation to the region. However, they also acknowledged the very real challenges that accompany such projects—particularly for small businesses.
These include:
Recruitment and workforce availability
Retention of skilled staff
Pressures on housing and accommodation
Ensuring that local suppliers and services are included in project delivery
A key takeaway from this discussion was the need for a collaborative database or cooperative that captures available local capability—products, services, contractors—making it easier for project leads to engage regional suppliers.
It was noted that the recently appointed Business Development Officer at Somerset Regional Council will play a crucial role in this space—acting as a conduit between local businesses and major project stakeholders.
Chamber Update: Growing Momentum in Our Inaugural Year
The event also featured an update from the Somerset Business Chamber, reflecting on its first year of operation and reaffirming its commitment to advocating for the region’s small business community.
With member engagement growing, new connections forming, and regular events offering real value, the Chamber is proud to be creating spaces where business, government, and community leaders can collaborate.
